Time for Another One

June 17, 2007: A hot busy Sunday started for the volunteers at UAFD with a trip to Dillsburg Boro around 0955 hours. The Truck and Engine Company were alerted for smoke in a structure at 43 South Baltimore St. Engine 223 (Kremer) and Truck 23 (Kunkel) responded together, and arrived to find normal conditions from the building. The crew from the Engine went interior to investigate, along with York County crews, and found the source of the smoke to be a furnace malfunction. The Truck crew laddered the building and assisted with ventilation before returning to service a little over an hour later. In the middle of the afternoon the Engine Company was alerted for a multi vehicle auto accident with one vehicle overturned at the intersection of South Market St. and Gettysburg Pike. Engine 123 (Kunkel) responded and arrived to find a three vehicle accident with a pick-up truck overturned and a large amount of debris in the roadway. The Rescue Engine crew split with half assisting with patient care, while the other half secured the vehicles and controlled fluid leaks. After an extensive clean up the Rescue Engine returned to service. Later on in the evening around 2141 hours the Engine Company was alerted for a reported vehicle fire in the area of mile marker 240 Westbound on the PA Turnpike. Engine 123 (Wilkinson) and Tanker 23 ( Stefanowicz) responded to be notified that Turnpike crews were on the scene with a fully involved moving truck. The Rescue Engine made its way through the long backlog and provided manpower to assist with extinguishing the fire while the Tanker arrived and supplied the attack Engine with water. The UAFD cleared the scene about an hour and half later while crews were performing what we thought would be the final overhaul of the contents. This proved to be false and again the Engine Company was dispatched for a reported vehicle fire on the Turnpike around 0239 hours Monday morning. Chief 123 (Salter) was advised that a dump truck containing the contents from the previous fire was at the Gettysburg Pike Interchange with a significant amount of smoke coming from the contents. Engine 123 (Kremer) arrived and took the hydrant at the interchange and stretched the foam line off the rig and thoroughly overhauled the contents of the trailer before returning to service half an hour later.
