Hazardous Materials Incident

May 14, 2008: Shortly after 2300 hours the UAFD was dispatched for a medical assist for an inhalation patient at Messiah Village. Upon arriving on scene Chief 23 and Engine 223 found that some staff had been exposed to what was believed to be a refrigerant leak from a rooftop cooling unit. Chief 23 set up command and had the incident upgraded to a first alarm assignment which brought surrounding units as well as the Cumberland County Haz-mat Team. Crews found that staff had secured the rooftop unit in question prior to fire department arrival. They then assisted with evacuating the residence of the effected wing and assisted the Haz-mat team with metering the space for any signs of the leak. Once metering was completed crews set up PPV at 3 separate doors and proceeded to ventilate the space of any remaining refrigerant. The entire response consisted of four engines, one truck, one rescue, one haz-mat unit, and eleven EMS units, as well as numerous command staff personnel. All units cleared the scene after operating for about 3 hours.
